You might have spent some time in the well-known and popular portions of Montana, but the Northwest region of Montana holds something special. It might not be as easy to get to as other parts of Montana, but that is what we like about it. We have personally been there on the 4Th of July multiple years and only saw a hand full of other drift boats throughout the entire week.
This outfitter has some of the most experienced and knowledgeable guides anywhere in the West. They spend their time guiding throughout Montana, but the Kootenai River is the gem that they like to call their home. Nestled in the most extreme corner of Montana between Idaho and Canada, the river is the largest tailwater fishery in Montana.
The river is full of beautiful broad riffles and flats that are perfect for long drifts and amazing Drift Boat fishing. The season is from mid-March through November, with the focus on the summer months for peak Dry Fly fishing. Although there are chances of some large trout, the rivers is full of extremely strong and healthy 12-15 trout that keep the action coming most of the day. You are likely to encounter Rainbows, Westslope Cutthroat with an occasional Bull Trout, Mountain Whitefish and possibly a Brown every once in a while. These Rainbows are something special. Inch for inch the hardest fighting, wild, trout we have ever encountered.
This fishing is best done with a 9ft 4-6 wt and a floating line.
The meals are all prepared in house as well as the amazing baked goods that will accompany every meal while at the lodge.
This outfitter also fishes small tributary streams in the Kootenai region as well as some stunning high elevation lakes.
This is a unique and fun way to spend a day at high elevation in a float tube catching beautiful, wild Cutthroat and Rainbows. If you have never done something like this, it offers an excellent opportunity to see this stunning country through a different lens for one of your fishing days.
For this fishing we like to bring along our favorite 7-8 ft 2wt 3wt or 4wt.
If you’ve already fished around the great state of Montana, you owe yourself an experience on the Kootenai River. You are guaranteed a wonderful and entirely unique experience.
