Los Roques has earned a reputation as one of the Caribbean’s premier fly-fishing destinations, offering incredible bonefishing along with an impressive variety of saltwater game fish. The combination of remote, pristine flats, consistent conditions, and abundant fish makes it a true destination for serious saltwater anglers.
Exceptional Variety
- Bonefish: The primary attraction, with huge numbers throughout the park. Average fish run 4–5 lbs, with fish over 8 lbs possible. Tailing bonefish are most consistent from late January through October.
- Tarpon: Resident throughout the year, with 5–30 lb fish found in lagoons and mangroves and larger 30–80 lb fish around El Gran Roque. The best tarpon window is September–February.
- Permit: Quality 20–40 lb fish are present year-round. They may not be as abundant as in Central America, but their size and the challenge of stalking them make them a major attraction. Prime season is September–February.
- Triggerfish: A growing favorite, with good-sized fish cruising the coral flats and providing another challenging sight-fishing opportunity.
- Jacks & Barracuda: Horse-eyed jacks can reach 30 lbs, while large barracuda to 60 lbs provide exciting shots throughout the park.
- Bluewater Species: Offshore opportunities include tuna, wahoo, dorado, bonito, marlin and swordfish, depending on conditions and equipment.
A Better Way to Fish the Flats
Los Roques utilizes a one-guide, one-captain system, giving anglers a major advantage in maximizing their time on the water. The captain can drop anglers and their guide on productive flats, beaches, or other areas and pick them up farther down, eliminating unnecessary backtracking and allowing the team to take advantage of changing tides, wind, current and sunlight.
Many productive areas are only 10–20 minutes from the lodge, while the farther flats are generally 30–45 minutes away. The extensive variety of flats, coral banks, beaches and mangrove lagoons also means anglers can continually move to the water that is fishing best throughout the day.
Year-Round Fishing
Los Roques is a legitimate year-round destination, with remarkably stable water and air temperatures, consistent trade winds and tides, and no winter cold fronts or hurricane exposure typical of many other Caribbean destinations.
Best Fishing Windows
- February–May: Excellent tailing bonefish, with increasingly favorable water levels.
- June–October: One of the destination’s biggest advantages—excellent summer fishing with opportunities for tailing bonefish throughout the day.
- September–February: Prime period for targeting tarpon and permit while bonefish remain available.
- November–January: Higher water levels produce more cruising bonefish and create excellent conditions for tarpon and permit.
Bottom Line: Los Roques offers far more than world-class bonefishing. The combination of abundant 4–5 lb bonefish, trophy tarpon and permit, triggerfish, jacks, barracuda and offshore species—combined with exceptional wade-fishing opportunities and a highly efficient guide/captain system—makes it one of the Caribbean’s most complete saltwater fly-fishing destinations.
