Kona Hawaii Big Game Charter Fishing #189

ABout this Adventure

Whether you’re traveling to the Hawaiian Islands for a family vacation or planning your trip specifically around world-class big-game fishing, choosing the right charter can make all the difference.

Kona is one of the world’s legendary blue marlin destinations, offering year-round access to deep Pacific water and an impressive variety of pelagic gamefish.

This experienced Kona sportfishing operation offers private, professionally guided fishing charters for anglers of all experience levels. Decades of local knowledge, a well-equipped boat, experienced crew, and a reputation for taking great care of guests make this an excellent option for anyone wanting to experience the famous waters off Hawaii’s Big Island.

Why Fish Kailua-Kona?

One of the biggest advantages of fishing Kona is geography.

Extremely deep water lies remarkably close to shore, allowing anglers to begin fishing productive offshore water without the long boat rides required at many big-game destinations.

Those waters can produce an impressive variety of species, including:

  • Pacific blue marlin
  • Striped marlin
  • Shortbill spearfish
  • Ahi (yellowfin tuna)
  • Mahi-mahi
  • Ono (wahoo)
  • Giant trevally
  • Amberjack

Whether your goal is your first offshore fishing experience or putting yourself in position for a trophy Pacific blue marlin, the crew can customize the trip around your experience and objectives.

Experienced Local Crew & Modern Equipment

Charters depart from Honokōhau Harbor aboard a modern, fully licensed fishing vessel equipped for serious offshore fishing.

Advanced sonar, outriggers, navigation and fish-finding technology help the crew identify productive ledges, current lines, bait concentrations, and other areas likely to hold fish.

Climate-controlled cabin space also provides welcome comfort during longer days offshore.

But technology only goes so far.

Local knowledge matters.

The crew brings decades of experience fishing Kona’s waters and understands how changing currents, water temperatures, bait concentrations, weather, and seasonal patterns can affect where the fish are likely to be on any particular day.

Great for Experienced Anglers—and First-Timers

You don’t have to be an experienced big-game fisherman to enjoy this trip.

The crew welcomes families, children, beginners, and experienced offshore anglers and provides the fishing equipment and instruction necessary to get everyone involved.

That makes this an especially good addition to a Hawaiian family vacation.

Spend a day chasing marlin and tuna while you’re on the Big Island—or build your entire vacation around several days of fishing.

What Our Clients Say

“We had an amazing day on the water. It was the first charter trip for my dad and my two sons, and everything went smoothly from start to finish. Captain Jimbo and his mate were outstanding. They were patient with the boys, shared helpful tips, and kept everyone involved the whole time.

It was clear they knew where to go and how to adjust to keep us on the fish. Watching my family hook into some solid action made the trip even more special.

We’d recommend this charter to anyone heading to Kona, whether you’re new to fishing or have experience.”

— Stefan M.

When Is the Best Time to Fish Kona?

One of the great things about Kailua-Kona is that there really isn’t a bad time to go fishing.

The fishery operates year-round, although the availability and abundance of individual species changes throughout the seasons.

Spring — April & May

Spring is an excellent time as offshore activity increases. Blue marlin, mahi-mahi, and ahi can all provide opportunities, along with other pelagic species.

Summer — June through August

Summer is one of the premier periods for Kona big-game fishing.

Blue marlin are a major attraction, while ahi, mahi-mahi, striped marlin, and shortbill spearfish can provide additional opportunities.

If catching a Pacific blue marlin is high on your bucket list, summer deserves serious consideration.

Fall — September & October

Fall continues to provide excellent offshore opportunities, with blue marlin, ahi, mahi-mahi, and other pelagic species creating a diverse fishery.

This can be an excellent period for anglers who aren’t exclusively focused on one species.

Winter — November through March

Kona doesn’t shut down when winter arrives.

Seasonal patterns change, but ono, ahi, marlin, shortbill spearfish, and bottom species can continue to provide quality fishing opportunities.

That makes Kona a legitimate fishing destination 12 months of the year.

How Do You Fish in Kona?

The crew uses several techniques depending upon the target species, conditions, and what is happening on the water.

Trolling is one of the primary methods for targeting marlin, mahi-mahi, ono, and other pelagic species.

Bait fishing may also be used when conditions or the target species make it advantageous.

Rather than committing to one technique before leaving the dock, the captain can adapt throughout the day based upon what the fish are doing.

That’s another advantage of fishing with an experienced local crew.

What Should You Bring?

Guests should bring food, drinks, sunscreen, sunglasses, appropriate clothing, and sun protection.

Which Kona Charter Should You Choose?

If you’re primarily looking to experience fishing while vacationing in Hawaii, a 4- or 6-hour charter may be all you need.

But if fishing is one of the primary reasons for your trip—or you’re hoping to catch a blue marlin, tuna, mahi-mahi, or another major pelagic species—we recommend spending as much time on the water as possible.

Our Choice for Serious Anglers: Full Day

Book the 8-hour or full-day charter.

More time gives the captain greater flexibility to search for productive water, react to changing conditions, and stay with a developing bite.

When you’re traveling all the way to Hawaii to fish, we’d rather give ourselves more opportunities—not fewer.

A Great Addition to Your Big Island Vacation

You don’t have to organize an entire fishing vacation to experience Kona’s legendary waters.

That’s one of the reasons we like this program.

A private charter can easily become one unforgettable day during a larger Hawaii family or couples vacation.

Experienced anglers can pursue serious offshore gamefish while beginners and younger anglers get their first taste of Pacific sportfishing.

And because charters accommodate up to six guests, families and groups can experience the day together.
