Chilean Patagonia offers some of the most expansive and lightly fished trout waters on the planet. At this Lodge, they design programs to help you fully explore this remarkable region by dividing your stay between two separate locations—giving you access to more water and a broader range of fisheries.
Situated south of Chaitén in Patagonia’s Lake District, their pair of riverfront lodges open the door to legendary waters such as the Río and Lago Yelcho, Río Futaleufú, Río and Lago Rosselot, Río Figueroa, Río Pico, and countless other rivers and lakes. These locations will allow you to experience some of the greatest Stillwater and River fishing in the region. A typical week-long stay is split between the two lodges with three days fishing the Lago Yelcho and three days fishing the Rio Rosselot regions, respectively.
This experience provides a tremendous opportunity to see new water every day of your trip, and enjoy the amenities of two separate lodging opportunities while still being hosted by the same organization. They coordinate a seamless week full of adventure, starting from pick up at the Santa Barbara airport. You will spend the first half of the week in a beautiful waterfront lodge near Lago Yelcho, and then transition to a second lodge for the remainder of your week it’s situated on the Rio Palena.
The Fishing
The lodge is staffed by a team of professional, highly trained, and seasoned American guides and is equipped with first-class fishing gear and purpose-built boats, allowing anglers to access an exceptional variety of waters throughout the region. Rainbow and brown trout are the primary targets, with seasonal opportunities for salmon and sea-run browns adding an extra dimension to the experience.
Fishing here is both varied and technical, rewarding anglers who can adapt to constantly changing conditions—whether throwing large streamers tight to the banks, nymphing deeper runs, or sight-fishing to trophy trout with everything from bold foam patterns to the most delicate dry flies.
The lakes offer outstanding sight-fishing and explosive surface action, while the rivers demand a versatile approach, producing fish through a wide range of techniques depending on the time of day, hatch, and weather.
Season: January, February, March, April
The Food
All meals are included—from breakfast through dinner, plus après—allowing guests to savor the flavors of Chile without ever leaving the lodge. Menus highlight fresh Pacific seafood such as mussels, clams, and Chilean sea bass, alongside Chilean and Argentine beef, prepared to order by talented chefs and paired with seasonal produce from neighboring farms. Evenings are complemented by local wines, classic pisco sours, Patagonian beers, and the occasional traditional asado BBQ.
Lodging
This fly fishing experience is a thoughtfully designed dual-lodge, 7-night/6-day program that allows guests to experience two exceptional fisheries in one seamless journey. The week begins at Rio Yelcho Lodge and concludes at Rio Rosselot Lodge. On the transition day, guests simply pack their luggage and head out to fish as usual. After a full day on the water, they arrive at Rio Rosselot Lodge to find their bags already delivered and waiting in their new room. The same fishing guides and lodge host accompany guests throughout the entire week, ensuring a smooth, effortless transition between lodges. By incorporating two distinct lodges into one program, anglers enjoy maximum access to the diverse and outstanding fishing opportunities the region has to offer. Both lodges feature comfortable double-occupancy rooms with private bathrooms, and together Rio Yelcho and Rio Rosselot Lodges host a maximum of ten anglers per week, maintaining an intimate and highly personalized experience.
Non-Angling Activities and Options
There are a great variety of non-fishing activities. These programs include horseback riding, bird watching, raft trips, hiking, and visiting any number of natural thermal hot springs in the area.
Travel
Travel begins with an international flight into Santiago(SCL), followed by a short domestic connection to Puerto Montt(PMC. There are several direct flights each day between Santiago and Puerto Montt; we recommend allowing at least three hours between flights to comfortably clear immigration and customs.
After the roughly two-hour flight south, you’ll be met at Puerto Montt Airport by a lodge-arranged transfer and driven to Puerto Varas, where you’ll spend the night. Located about 30 minutes from Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas is a charming lakeside town and the gateway to Chile’s famed Lake District, celebrated for its dramatic volcanoes, pristine lakes, and alpine scenery.
The following morning, you’ll be transferred back to Puerto Montt to board a short charter flight to Chaitén. Upon arrival, the lodge team will be waiting to escort you on a scenic transfer to Río Yelcho Lodge, where your Patagonian adventure truly begins.
