Set along Mexico’s scenic Riviera Maya, the lodge is located just one kilometer from the quiet fishing village of Punta Allen, and approximately a two-hour drive from Tulum International Airport. The property sits inside the remarkable Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, one of Mexico’s largest protected natural areas and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. From this remote and pristine setting, anglers have direct access to the famous flats of Ascension Bay—widely regarded as one of the top saltwater fly fishing destinations in Mexico.
The waters of the Sian Ka’an Reserve offer exceptional variety for saltwater anglers. Vast flats, mangrove shorelines, and protected lagoons create ideal habitat for a range of sought-after species. Anglers can pursue permit, bonefish, tarpon, and snook with both fly and spin tackle, with many opportunities for classic sight fishing in shallow water. The area’s healthy ecosystem and experienced local guides make it one of the best places in the region to chase a Grand Slam.
The lodge is also a wonderful destination for non-anglers looking to experience the natural beauty of the reserve. Guests can explore the surrounding wilderness through guided eco-tours, wildlife viewing, mangrove and lagoon boat excursions, snorkeling adventures, and visits to nearby Mayan sites, offering an unforgettable look at this unique corner of the Yucatán Peninsula.
Fly Fishing
The waters of Ascension Bay have long been regarded as one of the Caribbean’s most productive fisheries for anglers pursuing the famed flats trio—bonefish, permit, and tarpon. With an enormous network of shallow flats, mangrove shorelines, and protected lagoons, the area offers a rare combination of species diversity and consistent opportunities. Anglers can enjoy a balanced saltwater program targeting multiple species, or dedicate their time to the ultimate challenge of stalking permit on the flats.
A defining element of the program is the guide service. Each skiff operates with two highly experienced captains, both fully capable of poling, navigating, and guiding anglers. With two sets of trained eyes scanning the flats, anglers benefit from exceptional fish spotting and boat positioning—resulting in one of the most attentive and effective guide teams in the region.
Permit fishing is a major highlight of the area. Expansive flats are found throughout Ascension Bay and within the nearby Boca Paila Lagoon system, many of which can be reached within minutes of the lodge. When conditions are calm, guides often spot fish from the skiff and then have anglers slip quietly into the water to stalk tailing permit on foot. Fish in the 10–15 pound range are common, though much larger permit—some exceeding 30 pounds—are encountered each season.
For anglers seeking variety, the surrounding backcountry lagoons and mangrove-lined creeks provide outstanding opportunities for tarpon and snook. Juvenile tarpon ranging from 10 to 30 pounds are present throughout the year, while larger migratory fish move through the area during the spring and summer months. You will want to pack a variety of rods including 8wt, 9wt, 10wt, and maybe 11/12.
Flourocarbon leaders are the rule, and you will want them in 9ft 12,16,20 lb with tippet to match. Flies will need to cover all the bases for inshore Flats species, Crabs, Shrimp, Baitfish and more.
Spin Fishing
This location is great for all anglers. Spin anglers will discover an incredibly diverse fishery in the waters of Ascension Bay, where a mix of expansive flats, mangrove shorelines, and deeper channels creates a wide range of fishing opportunities. The variety of environments keeps every day interesting, offering anglers the chance to target numerous species while constantly adapting their approach.
Anglers can expect exciting action from hard-fighting species such as barracuda and jack crevalle, along with a variety of snapper, grouper, and sharks that inhabit the surrounding reefs and channels. In addition, the inshore flats and protected lagoons provide excellent opportunities to pursue some of the region’s most sought-after game fish, including tarpon, snook, bonefish, and permit.
Fishing takes place within the protected waters of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve near Tulum, where conservation regulations require the use of artificial lures only. This approach helps protect the fishery while adding an extra level of skill and challenge for anglers.
Whether you are an experienced spin fisherman or trying saltwater fishing for the first time, Ascension Bay offers an exciting and memorable angling experience in one of Mexico’s most unique coastal ecosystems.
