The Fishing
The Golden Dorado (Salminus brasiliensis) is one of South America’s most iconic freshwater game fish, celebrated for its striking golden hue, powerful build, and aggressive nature. A member of the Characidae family, this remarkable species inhabits the great river systems of the continent, with the Paraná River serving as one of its most important strongholds.
Stretching across vast and varied landscapes, the Paraná provides an environment ideally suited to the dorado’s life cycle. Its rocky outcrops, submerged ledges, shifting sandbars, and deep channels create prime ambush points for this apex predator. Strong currents and oxygen-rich waters further enhance the habitat, supporting abundant baitfish populations that sustain the dorado’s voracious appetite.
Renowned for explosive strikes and acrobatic fights, the Golden Dorado thrives in these dynamic conditions. The river’s diverse structure not only supports its predatory instincts but also provides essential spawning grounds, ensuring the continued vitality of the species. In many ways, the Paraná River is inseparable from the identity of the Golden Dorado — a native environment whose unique character has shaped one of freshwater fishing’s most revered species.
The Middle Paraná River is where Golden Dorado fishing in Argentina first became known. Anglers fish from 17-foot Carolina Skiffs powered by 90 hp Yamaha 4-stroke outboards, with a Minn Kota trolling motor. This allows the boats to locate and maintain proper position for two anglers to be fishing to prime water.
Guides drift downstream along the bank, keeping the boat in casting range of prime ambush spots. Golden dorado are aggressive predators, and will require anglers to master the strip set in order to stay connected. These fish are ambush predators that will require to anglers to cover prime spots with big flies and rods with backbone.
Double hauling to generate line speed and precise casting will maximize your chances at these trophy fish. They will be hiding in spots you can see as well as those you cannot see, so covering the water with efficiency and the least effort possible will create more opportunities throughout the day. Many days are filled with 9wts and popper fishing.
While hammering the banks with flies, anglers are surrounded by the lush Middle Paraná ecosystem. Slow down and take a look around between cast, this area is home to hundreds of bird species and other wildlife, adding a spectacular natural backdrop to every cast.
The Lodge runs year-round, with peak dorado fishing November through March.
