From January through March, some of the finest dry fly fishing for Brown and Rainbow Trout in South America takes place near the town of Coyhaique. This spectacular region of Patagonia offers anglers the freedom to walk and wade or float through pristine, unpressured waters.
For those who enjoy sight fishing, the area is rich with spring creeks and crystal-clear lakes holding trophy-sized trout. This exceptional fishery is paired with experienced local guides, specialized equipment, and refined techniques to maximize your success on the water.
Each day is complemented by gourmet streamside lunches, and evenings are spent unwinding in a warm, comfortable lodge—enjoying expertly prepared meals and fine Chilean wines in a relaxed, inviting atmosphere.
The Fishing
From January through March, all of the major rivers in the Coyhaique region are in prime condition for exceptional dry fly fishing. Anglers can expect consistent action, particularly with grasshopper patterns on the Ñirehuao River and the upper stretches of the Simpson River.
In addition to these productive waters, the region boasts a wide variety of renowned fisheries, including the Paloma River, Emperador Guillermo, Huemules, and the Aysén River—each offering unique and rewarding angling opportunities.
For those seeking a more visual experience, sight fishing in clear lakes and spring creeks is consistently available, providing the chance to target trophy brown trout in some of Patagonia’s most pristine and scenic environments.
This is classic trout fishing that might remind of fishing in the Rocky Mount 50 years ago. Pack your favorite trout rods 4wt 5wt and 6wt, load the dry fly box with hoppers and foam patterns And be prepared for big strong trout.
