The marshes south of New Orleans are widely recognized as one of the most productive year-round saltwater fisheries in the world. This region offers an exceptional fly fishing destination that is both convenient and affordable. The vast Louisiana marsh holds some of the largest, most plentiful, and least pressured redfish in the Gulf of Mexico, all located less than an hour from the New Orleans airport.
Fishing here is classic sight-casting for redfish in shallow marsh ponds and flats. While accurate casts are important, most opportunities fall within 10–40 feet, making this an accessible and enjoyable destination for anglers of all skill levels.
Guests stay in comfortable single or double occupancy rooms—most commonly single—at a beautifully restored historic plantation-style inn. The property offers classic Southern hospitality, excellent cuisine, a fully stocked bar, and a relaxed atmosphere that perfectly complements a day on the water.
The Fly Fishing
The Louisiana coastal marsh offers an incredible sight-fishing experience for redfish. The sheer numbers and size of fish found in these waters are truly remarkable. The marsh south of New Orleans is a rich and vibrant ecosystem, with redfish found around nearly every bend—whether in shallow bays, winding creeks, or backcountry ponds. From the well-known fall and winter runs of bull redfish, often exceeding 30 pounds, to the dependable spring and summer fishing for large numbers of 5–15 pound fish, this region is a true paradise for saltwater fly anglers. 8wt, 9wt, 10wt are the rods you should bring and be sure to practice your short, quick casts prior to travel.
All fishing is done from boats, as the soft, muddy flats make wading impractical. Anglers sight cast to redfish cruising in shallow water—targeting singles, small groups, and sometimes large schools. Most casts fall within the 10–30 foot range, making this an approachable and rewarding fishery for anglers of all skill levels. When the weather is right, the sight fishing opportunities are hard to beat.
All The Other Fishing
The inshore fishing with conventional tackle can be equally satisfying for the non fly angler. Arrangements can be made for a larger boat with more range and space for additional anglers to go out and target bull redfish, large speckled trout, sheepshead, tripletail, and a variety of other species depending on the season. Many corporate and family groups enjoy coming down the road from New Orleans and staying at this beautiful facility for multiple days of this type of fishing.
The amazing thing about Venice LA. is that you can fish inshore for a day or two targeting the redfish and speckled trout and then charter an offshore boat for your third day. The offshore fishing in the northern Gulf of America is some of the finest anywhere, including a variety of snapper, tuna, wahoo and billfish. With this variety of angling all from one lodge, it makes it a great place to satisfy all the needs and fishing desires of your entire group.
A customized fixing package ideal for your group can be designed to include any number of the variety of different fishing days listed above, or just focus on the technique you love the most.
The Lodging
This historic antebellum estate has been thoughtfully transformed into a welcoming bed and breakfast, providing an ideal home base for anglers exploring the Louisiana marsh. Originally established in the early 1800s as a working plantation, the property now operates as a comfortable inn featuring more than twenty guest rooms, each with a private bath. In addition to the main house, several separate buildings on the grounds offer private homes or condo-style accommodations that are well suited for small groups. The variety of lodging options will be sure that if you book in advance you can have the perfect setup for your corporate group or family reunion.
One of the most unique aspects of the property is the dining room and bar, which was created from a restored church that was relocated and converted into a charming social gathering space. Evenings revolve around outstanding Southern and Cajun cuisine, with favorites such as fresh oysters, fried shrimp, gumbo, blackened redfish, and other regional specialties. Homemade desserts—often pecan pie, bread pudding, or ice cream—round out the meals, while lunches on the water typically feature hearty sandwiches and lodge-style fare.
Dining
Fresh Louisiana oysters are served year-round, along with a variety of classic Cajun and Creole dishes. House specialties include rich seafood gumbo, fried bread pudding, and fresh local fish—often caught by guests during their time on the water with local guides. Be sure to sample the house punch, a longtime guest favorite.
Guests enjoy breakfast each morning, and dinner in the evening. The dining space also serves as an excellent venue for private groups, meetings, weddings, and special celebrations.
The fishing is why you come here, but you might just want to stay for the food.
