For more than 25 years, the lodge owners have had the privilege of operating fly fishing programs on both coasts of Kamchatka. I invite you to experience what they believe is one of the last true frontiers in wild trout fishing.
Thank you for your interest in Rainbows Heli Fishing — an intentionally small, highly personalized program. We welcome individual anglers, and each week is limited to just four guests to ensure an exceptional experience.
This is a helicopter-based rainbow trout adventure offered for only four select weeks during the 2026 season, with four anglers per week. You will have a personal host and guide with each group. The upcoming season marks their seventh year running Rainbows Heli Fishing and for the hosts, their 24th season guiding in Kamchatka.
The format centers on six full days of fishing, accessing remote rivers exclusively by helicopter. There are no roads, no permanent camps, and no competing anglers. Each morning, you will assess weather and river conditions, then choose the most productive water for the day. The result is complete flexibility — and access to untouched rivers winding through dramatic volcanic landscapes, where large, aggressive rainbow trout thrive in total isolation.
Over the years, these guys have fished more than 60 rivers across the peninsula and built an extensive library of proven locations. Together, you will discuss the options each day and tailor the experience to match conditions and your goals.
Only sixteen anglers will fish this program in 2026 — and half the spaces are already reserved.
The Fishing
Kamchatka’s rainbow trout benefit from a slightly warmer climate and an exceptionally rich food base, creating one of the most productive trout fisheries in the world. Extensive stream sampling across more than 30 rivers revealed dense, diverse hatches of mayflies, caddis, and multiple stonefly species throughout the season. Add a massive annual salmon return, and you have a protein-rich system that consistently produces large, aggressive fish.
How big are they?
The average rainbow runs close to 21 inches and around four pounds. Fish over 24 inches and six pounds are common, and each season produces trout surpassing the 30-inch mark — a testament to the health of these untouched rivers.
Fishing styles vary with conditions, but the focus is always visual and active. Swinging streamers can be highly effective, yet mouse patterns often steal the show. Dry flies produce consistent action during prolific hatches. Heavy sink tips and weighted flies are unnecessary — we fish floating lines with stout leaders, using mice, streamers, and dries exclusively.
Angling pressure is virtually nonexistent. These fish are unconditioned, aggressive, and willing — often chasing a skated mouse to your feet.
On the Ozernaya River, you’ll have more than 15 jet-accessible miles of productive water each day. On the Two Yurt River, we fish stunning wilderness miles between fixed lodges. While our program emphasizes wade fishing for the most immersive experience, boat fishing is always an easy and effective option.
This is big, wild rainbow trout fishing — visual, varied, and intensely rewarding.
Because these rainbows are consistently large and powerful, we recommend 6- or 7-weight rods paired with quality reels and matching lines. A floating line will handle the vast majority of situations, but bring at least one setup with a standard 15-foot sink tip for deeper runs or higher water conditions.
At minimum, pack one complete backup rod and reel combination.
We fish heavy leaders and tippet. Do not bring anything lighter than 3X. Most of the time, we fish 10- to 15-pound tippet with 6-foot leaders.
Recommended materials:
• Maxima Ultragreen in 10 lb and 15 lb
• A spool of 2X or 3X for dry fly fishing
• Flourocarbon in 10lb 15lb 20lb
The fly assortments vary from day to day depending on how you want to catch the fish. Many anglers will throw a floating line and a top water mouse pattern for the entire week, so pack a lot of mouse patterns if that’s. Others will prefer Swing large streamers that are weight and built primarily with rabbit fur and they get down quickly and imitate targeted baitfish. The Dalai Lama fly pattern and similar large Sculpin and egg sucking Leech patterns catch many fish. If you are a dry fly person, oversize attractor dry flies should be filling your box.
If you don’t want to pack a fly box the Outfitter is offering a custom box geared specifically for the rivers and region that you will be fishing. Please request details and information on the hand tied custom flies.
Lodging
Set at the headwaters of Two Yurt Lake, this lodge rests in a breathtaking alpine valley framed by sweeping tundra and volcanic peaks. Originally built as the outfitters premier spring bear hunting lodge, it has evolved into one of the finest-appointed wilderness fishing lodges anywhere in the world.
Guests enjoy private single rooms, natural hot springs to soak in after a long day on the river, and a newly constructed dining room that serves as the heart of the camp. Comfortable, refined, and completely remote — it’s an exceptional base for exploring this remarkable fishery. This will act as your resting point each night after your day of Helicopter Rainbow adventures.
Travel
You will work directly with the outfitter and his travel company to make arrangements to get to Kamchatka. This outfitter has been making the trip for many years and will help you plan and book the best possible itinerary. The best way to travel to Kamchatka is through Beijing – Vladivostok – Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky. One long flight and two short flights.
Once in Kamchatka, all river access is by Mi-8 helicopter, first introduced in 1965 and widely considered one of the most reliable commercial helicopters ever built.
With twin turbine engines, a 360-mile range, cruising speeds over 100 mph, and the capacity to carry anglers and gear with ease, the Mi-8 is the backbone of transportation across the peninsula. It allows us to reach remote rivers completely inaccessible by road.
Flights operate under strict aviation oversight for safety. While weather delays are possible in this remote environment, they are uncommon.
The flight itself is part of the experience — sweeping views of volcanoes, tundra, and untouched rivers below.
SEASON & RATES:
August 22-September 19th
$8,895 land portion of the trip from Petropavlovsk.
