Just thirty yards from the riverbank, your private cabin overlooks a highly productive stretch of water known for consistent trout action. From your porch, you can watch the current roll through riffles and runs while planning the day ahead.
“My adult son and I just got home from 3 days here. World class all the way. Very comfortable – great food – great guide – great fishing. The room was perfect and very comfortable and clean. For fly fishing this is about as good as it gets in my opinion”.
Each morning begins with an early breakfast at the lodge restaurant, where a hot meal and fresh coffee fuel you for a full day on the water. Afterward, you can return to your cabin to organize gear and prepare for the day. Your guide will arrive shortly to discuss river conditions, match the right rods and flies to the hatch, and customize the plan based on your experience and goals. With only a short drive to the nearest launch, you’ll be on the river and fishing within minutes.
One of the most popular floats takes anglers into the renowned Quality Waters — a designated trout section celebrated for its remarkable fish density, often estimated at 10,000–12,000 trout per mile. Additional float routes and wade-fishing opportunities allow your guide to tailor the day to your preferred style, whether that means drifting productive seams, targeting rising fish, or focusing on trophy-class trout.
When the fishing day winds down, return to the lodge for well-earned relaxation before dinner. Each evening, one of our two professional chefs prepares a thoughtfully crafted meal, providing the perfect end to a memorable day outdoors.
Beyond the river, the lodge offers plenty of ways to unwind. Enjoy friendly competition in the hospitality room with pool, shuffleboard, or darts, or settle in to watch your favorite game on the big-screen TV. Step outside for a round of horseshoes, or relax on the spacious deck and take in the peaceful sound of the river as the sun dips below the trees.
The Fishing
The San Juan is one of the finest tail fisheries in the Western US. The dam below the Navajo Reservoir provides great wade fishing in the quality waters. As you progress down from the dam the river becomes much more effectively fished from a classic drift boat. The fish are large but their dietary insects are very small, so light tippet and small flies under indicators are generally the most productive way to big numbers into the net. The river, with its rich insect life, also great match the Hatch dry fly scenarios for the angler looking for a greater challenge. As the river winds downstream towards the lodge, it takes on more natural characteristics and you begin to see greater numbers of brown trout. A 3 or 4-day trip at the lodge will keep you on the same river, but you may not fish the same section more than one day.
“I can’t say enough how fantastic this place is. A good friend and I stayed there for 3 days. The accommodations were superb, the dining 5 Star and the fishing the best I’ve ever experienced. Our guide took care of us extremely well and put us in prime parts of the river on both our upper and lower drifts for each of our two day, on the water, experience. I’ve never had a better guide with the patience and knowledge to produce a productive and memorable fishing adventure.”
This is classic trout water so we recommend 4 weight 5 weight and 6 weight 9-foot rods or longer. 5X and 6X tippets with long are necessary throughout this entire river, so be sure to pack appropriately.
